Valkyria Assignments for students

Valkyria is a Bolliger & Mabillard  that will open at Liseberg in 2018. This  "Dive coaster" will have a 50m drop and a total length of 750m. (See Facts about Valkyria)


According to the information from Liseberg, 1100 persons can ride the Valkyria in an hour. Each of the three trains can take 18 riders. 

  1. How often does a train leave the station?
  2. How may times does each train leave the station every hour?
  3. In the movie, the ride takes approximately 90 seconds. How long time does each train spend on the station for unloading and loading new riders (including waiting time)?

The dive, speed and velocity 

  1. In the movie you find "yourself" hanging over the drop for a few seconds before the train starts to move. What forces act on you during this part of the ride? What do you expect the accelerometer on your phone to show?
  2. Which forces act on you during a 90° drop?
  3. How long do you expect a 50 m drop to last?
  4. What time is required for a free fall to reach 105 km/h? How far would you fall during that time?
  5. What  the average speed during the ride? How does it compare to the maximum speed? (And what  the average velocity during the ride? 

Barrel roll

At the end of the ride (about 1:13), you enter a Barrel roll ("Heartline roll"), which is essentially a "Uniform rectilinear motion", while the body rotates around the heartline. 

  1. What forces act on you during uniform rectilinear motion? How are the forces affected by the rotation?
  2. What would you expect the accelerometers to show during the heartline roll?
  3. Is the rotation around your "x-axis" positive or negative? Try to move you phone in the same way and see what the sensors show. (Read more about data collection)

Until the Valkyria has opened - check a movie analysing the Heartline roll in Helix. . Does the Valkyria rotate in the same direction as Helix? As Kanonen?

Virtual or real realities 

As you watch the video, reflect on: 

  • At what parts of the ride do you move the fastest? What clues can you use? 
  • During what parts of a real ride would you feel lighter than normal? 
  • During what parts of a real ride would you feel heavier? 
  • What clues are used in simulators to make your body believe that your are lighter or heavier than normal, while sitting in an essentially stationary seat?
